Swim Scheme
Warrington Swim Scheme

The Swim Scheme encompasses the following areas:
1. Child learn to swim/improvers
2. Adult learn to swim/improvers
3. Swimming programme for primary schools
4. Amateur Swimming Association education centre
5. Royal Life Saving Society education centre
From January 2008 Warrington Swim Scheme swimming lessons will be based upon a framework called the National Plan For Teaching Swimming (NPTS). It is produced by the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA), which is the National Governing Body for Swimming.
The NPTS provides a national syllabus for aquatic achievement. The new programme will supersede our existing programme and there will be changes to the classes and the skills being taught. The NPTS framework encourages swimming lesson providers to deliver aquatic instruction in a FUN environment to aid learning and understanding. You will notice an emphasis on fun and games within your child’s swimming lesson. The use of games and fun activities to deliver learning outcomes is proven to be the most effective way for children to learn and all activities will have a purpose behind them.
A course of lessons will be 12 weeks in duration and there will be 4 x 12-week courses per year - in January, April, June and September. A child will move on to the next level as he/she achieves all the skills at each level. ASA badges and certificates will be awarded, at an additional cost, only when a child achieves all the appropriate skills at each level.
Your child’s ‘journey through aquatics’ will be enhanced with the introduction of the NPTS as there will be progressive stepping stones along the way and more opportunities later on to take part in a wider range of activities and other water based sports.
In implementing these changes Select Leisure aims to provide a higher standard and an even better quality of lesson. More information about the NPTS is available on the ASA web site and through parent resources produced by the ASA.
Warrington is a town surrounded by rivers and canals. It is therefore very important that everyone has the opportunity to learn the swimming and safety skills that will prevent them from drowning. These skills are all part of our learn to swim programme.
When swimmers have reached the standards and covered all areas in the swimming lesson programme, the teacher may recommend a swimmer for SWIM LINK.
Swim Link is designed to link the swimming programme operated at each leisure centre into the first stage of competitive training in a club programme. It is a talent identification programme aimed at the six to nine year age groups.
At the conclusion of a Swim Link trial the Swimming Development Officer will decide on an individual basis where a child is to progress. If a swimmer is ready they will be asked to join Swim Link. If they are not ready they will be asked to return to lessons at their centre and may be asked to join Swim Link at a later date. There are two different coaching charges for the Swim Link courses. Swimmers who are only participating in the Swim Link course pay a higher tuition fee than those swimmers who also wish to continue with their swimming lessons. All Swim Link participants are also required to pay an additional weekly tuition fee.
The club programme if successful will eventually provide incentives in the form of awards and low-level competition, as swimmers become more competent. The swimmers will be continually monitored and eventually the very best will be invited to join the Warrington Borough Council swim training scheme. The swimmers will gradually progress through this programme, which is designed to give each swimmer the opportunity to realise their maximum potential.
The adult swimming lesson programme offers beginner and improver levels. The programme has clear objectives with easily identified pathways in order to achieve them. The age range for adults lessons is 16 plus.
Swimming lessons are available at the following leisure centres:
Broomfields Leisure Centre
Fordton Leisure Centre
Great Sankey Leisure Centre
Woolston Leisure Centre
We have lessons available for everyone from beginners to advanced swimmers.
To register, complete a swimming lesson application form (available at each leisure centre) and return it to the Swim Scheme Office, Woolston Leisure Centre, Hall Road, Woolston, Warrington WA1 4PN. To request an application form you can also telephone Carol, at the Swim Scheme office, on: 01925 850418.
Primary school swimming programme
Our primary school swimming programme is a very successful one. The children are taught Key Stage 1 & 2 of the National Curriculum in physical education. On achievement of key stage 2 children will be able to swim 25 metres and have developed basic skills, knowledge and understanding of the principles of water safety. Research has indicated that of all the physical activities that children participate in whilst at school, it is swimming that they are most likely to continue when they leave school.
The school swimming programme is offered as a complete package. Pool time, transport, and teaching staff are provided based on the requirements of each school. The primary schools appreciate being able to leave us to deal with the details.
Additionally, we organise the Warrington Primary Schools Gala. The schools initially compete in preliminary galas with the top 12 swimmers in each event being eligible for the ‘A’ and ‘B’ gala finals. These galas are very popular and successful.
A.S.A. / R.L.S.S courses
As an education centre for both the Amateur Swimming Association and the Royal Life Saving Society, we are able to provide a ready supply of qualified staff for our centres and other local authorities.
The training courses that we can offer are:
ASA/UKCC Level 1 Teaching Aquatics
ASA/UKCC Level 2 Teaching Aquatics
RLSS Pool Lifeguard Qualification
The Teacher and Pool Lifeguard courses are always in demand because they are standard qualification for employment as a teacher/lifeguard.
Other ASA courses can be made available if there is a demand. For further information and details please contact Carol Rourke at crourke@warrington.gov.uk or telephone on 01925 850418.
