Woolston community hub will soon be the first neighbourhood hub in Warrington now that the plans have been given the green light by the council's Executive Board.
The hub is a key element of the Neighbourhoods in Warrington regeneration programme in the area. Its aim is to provide better public services for those living nearby.
£450,000 from the Department for Children, Schools and Families and £58,000 from the Department of Culture, Media and Sports has already been received for the project.
Cllr Liz Smith, Executive Board member for neighbourhoods and communities said: "This centre stands to make a really important contribution to the community life in Woolston. Here and in future projects planned across the town, these new facilities will provide an exciting opportunity for efficient joint working and the sharing of resources with fellow service providers."
Cllr Bob Timmis, Executive Board member for leisure and skills said: "The hub will make it even easier for local residents to take advantage of an improved range of leisure and learning opportunities in first class facilities."
Phase one will begin early in 2010 and includes the relocation of Woolston community library, the construction of a children's centre, a new reception area and the building of a fitness suite, sauna and steam room. This work should be finished by May 2010.
The second stage will then commence in June and will include work on changing areas, construction of new sauna and multi purpose studio space. Stage two should be complete by August 2010, and the hub entirely open to the public in the autumn.
