You’re in safe hands when you work out at any of the five council run leisure centres!

Select Leisure have become the first service local authority leisure service to achieve accreditation with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) for exhibiting excellence in health and safety. This accreditation was achieved on the first attempt- a fact that RoSPA described as ‘highly commendable’.

A measure of this success in itself is that Warrington Borough Council's Select Leisure is the only leisure department in the whole of the UK that have achieved this highly valued award.

During the past 18 months Select Leisure have introduced a number of health and safety systems, these included:

• Supporting all staff through a basic health and safety qualification.
• Training 80% of staff in COSHH and Manual handling.
• NEBOSH qualified four management staff.
• Developing new procedures in key areas.
• Structuring a planned approach to health and safety.

• Sharing their progress with other services.

The process has involved all Select Leisure staff with the focus on health and safety being a shared responsibility and a common goal. All levels of the service have contributed to ensure it is a plan driven by those directly involved. RoSPA highlighted this by commending Select Leisure on their co-operation and consultation with staff.

Along the way Select Leisure have been guided by the corporate Health and Safety Team who have offered advice and support. Likewise, departmental commitment was unwaivering, and without this level of support the accreditation would not have been possible.
