Share the care
The council is backing a national campaign urging people to ‘Be the BIG difference’ by offering support to disabled children and their families.
Local families and people are being sought to offer short break care to disabled children or young people for agreed short periods of time perhaps every other weekend or a regular tea time visit. Training and support is available.
Cllr Sheila Woodyatt, executive board member for children and young people said: “We currently have a small number of very valued family-based carers but there are many more children waiting to access this service. Short break carers really do transform the lives of families of disabled children, not only do they give parents a break from caring; they give disabled children the chance to take part in new activities and develop independence. Being a short break carer is a very rewarding role.”
